Madison County Public Library receives KLC Insurance safety grant

RICHMOND — “We use every opportunity to make our libraries safer,” Madison County Public Library Director Ruthie Maslin, said of the $1,652 grant the library was recently awarded by the Kentucky League of Cities Insurance Services (KLCIS).

The grant will be used to install new entry mats in the library’s Richmond and Berea branches.

As economic uncertainty continues, grants such as as the KLCIS safety grant are a practical way to make the library’s budget go farther.

“We work hard to make our libraries inviting, accessible and safe for our more than 350,000 annual visits,” Maslin said. “With so many people coming in and out of our buildings, maintaining clean, safe entry areas is critical. Many don’t realize the cost involved in purchasing and maintaining the mats. The KLCIS grant is a huge help in off-setting that cost.”

The Kentucky League of Cities has awarded more than $3.2 million since the Safety Grant Program started in 1999. In addition to Madison County Public Library, 114 other KLCIS members received safety grants. A total of $440,000 was awarded in this year’s program.

The awarded funds will go toward training, purchase of slip resistant shoes, sidewalk repairs, confined-space equipment, law-enforcement accreditation fees, and other equipment to improve public and employee safety, as well as the purchase of classes through the KLCIS Online University.

KLCIS provides safety grants to its members annually. As Kentucky’s largest municipal insurance program, KLCIS provides a full range of affordable liability, property, workers’ comp and other products to municipalities. In addition, the Kentucky League of Cities offers employee benefits programs, financial services, training and education, policy and development, legislative advocacy, information technology and legal services.
