Firefighters put out suspicious blaze in home near Waco

MADISON COUNTY — Madison County firefighters quickly put out a fire Thursday evening in a vacant house east of Richmond near Waco.

Although it was initially called in as meth lab-related fire, Madison County Fire Chief Jim Cox said no evidence of meth manufacturing had been found in the home on Charlie Norris Road.

The report of the fire came in at 6 p.m., and firefighters had it under control in a matter of minutes. The fire did significant interior damage that could be seen on one side of the house.

Cox was accompanied by the county fire investigator who began his work at the site shortly before 7 p.m.

Waco Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Jason Rawlins said neighbors reported seeing a truck pull up to the house and leave shortly before the fire.

About a dozen people, neighbors and owners of the house, milled about outside the structure while talking to firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy.

One neighbor said he had smelled suspicious chemicals in the area of the house two nights ago.

Union City Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the fire.
