‘Smash-and-grab’ burglary spree continues

RICHMOND — Three Richmond businesses were struck Wednesday night by one or more burglars who police believe are responsible for a series of similar crimes in March and February.

The glass on either the doors or windows of College Marathon on Lancaster Avenue, Perfect Finish body shop on Hallie Irvine Street and Ron’s Auto Service on Four Mile Road was broken out during the late night or early morning, according to Richmond Police Department Maj. Bob Mott.

In all three cases, small amounts of cash or nothing was taken, he said.

Last week, Concord Cleaners on the Eastern Bypass, Doggie Livin’ on St. George Street and I-75 Yamaha on North Keeneland Drive were burglarized on the same night, March 28, in the same manner.

Concord Cleaners has been targeted twice, with another burglary occurring previously on Feb. 16. That night, two additional businesses – Madison Flower Shop on East Main Street and Air Economics on East Irvine Street – had windows or doors smashed.

Mott said the string of “smash-and-grab” burglaries are all related. The perpetrator is going in through the front of a building and spending little time in the business, he said.

In last night’s break-in at College Marathon, a witness was able to get a general description of the burglar. He is a white male with a stocky build and no facial hair, the witness told police. He drives a silver vehicle similar to Geo.

Mott said that although nothing of value and little cash has been taken in the burglaries, the damage done to the windows and doors amount to hundreds of dollars.

The RPD has stepped up patrols in Richmond during the night in response to the business break-ins, Mott said.
