RICHMOND — Madison County and Berea Independent school districts canceled classes for Monday. Eastern Kentucky University and its Model Laboratory School also are closed. Richmond city government is operating on a two-hour delay.
Except for police, firefighters and public works employees who are treating streets, city of Richmond operations will begin on a two-hour delay Monday.
City Hall will not open until 10 a.m., City Manager Jimmy Howard announced at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Howard said the city government had never begun its day on a delay, but he made the decision after monitoring weather developments all day Sunday and conferring with Madison County Emergency Management officials. He also noted that the Lexington-Fayette County government would be opening on a two-hour delay Monday.
A blanket of snow covered a layer of sleet that began falling around 10 p.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service had issued a winter storm warning for the Richmond area that went into effect 4 p.m. Sunday and will continue to 1 p.m. Monday. It forecasted 6 to 10 inches of sleet and snow accumulation, including up to .2 inches of ice.
