Women of Whimsy

RICHMOND — When Denise Discepoli, art teacher at Model Laboratory School, was in Japan last fall for Madison County’s Sister Region exchange, she met two artists who expressed interest in bringing their works to Kentucky.

On Tuesday, the Gallery on Main hosted a reception for Yoko Shimura and Akoko Nakazawa, whose work will hang in the gallery until Monday. The exhibit is part of the gallery’s Women of Whimsy series.

Tuesday also was the gallery’s 10th annual trunk sale with more than 20 local artists and artisans participating.

Among Shimura’s work are creations that hang from the ceiling giving the appearance of falling snowflakes or fluffy clouds.

Nakazawa has paintings on display. She creates her own pigments by grinding minerals and metals, including gold and silver, as well animal bone.

Both artists’ work is for sale.

The gallery is inside Community Trust Bank, 128 W. Main St., Richmond, across from the Madison County Courthouse.
