Register staff report
About 800 walkers, runners and volunteers literally packed the track Thursday at Eastern Kentucky University for the second annual Pack the Track for Diabetes Awareness event.
The event spotlights the impact of diabetes awareness and prevention on the entire community’s health.
The more than $10,000 raised from the event will help fund much needed medicines and supplies for uninsured or underinsured people with diabetes through the Madison County Diabetes Coalition’s patient-assistance program.
The event was open to anyone who wanted to show support for diabetes awareness.

Madison County has an estimated 8,500 individuals living with diabetes.
Nationwide, more than 26 million Americans suffer from this chronic disease.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an additional 79 million Americans have prediabetes, a condition where blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Unless more steps are taken to stop this trend, as many as 1 in 3 adults could have diabetes by the year 2050.
