Police: Man breaks in, assaults woman

RICHMOND — A Berea man is behind bars after police arrested him Thursday after he reportedly assaulted a woman and forced his way into her Richmond home.

Jonathan E. Decoster, 25, of Legacy Drive in Berea, is charged with first-degree burglary, fourth-degree assault and violating a Kentucky Domestic Violence Order.

Police were dispatched Thursday to an apartment in the 700 block of N. Third Street to investigate a reported assault.

“Officers met with a female victim who indicated she had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, identified as Decoster,” said Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock. “The victim reported that she and Decoster had been arguing via telephone and text throughout the day.”

At approximately 7:55 p.m., the victim heard a knock at her door.

“When she opened the door slightly to see who was there, Decoster pushed open the door and shoved past her to enter the apartment,” Brock said. “When the victim approached Decoster to question him about entering the apartment, he struck her in the stomach with his fist. He then shoved her into a door frame and punched her in the back.”

Decoster then released the victim and he left the apartment.

Officers determined that Decoster was currently under a Domestic Violence Order (DVO) that prohibited him from any acts of violence or abuse toward the victim.

Decoster was arrested and taken to the Madison County Detention Center. As of Friday afternoon, he remained jailed under a $15,000 cash bond.

In other crime:

• A representative of The Dry Dock on Four Mile Avenue reported Tuesday that the establishment had been broken into overnight and an undetermined amount of cash was stolen. Entry was gained by forcing open a side door, according to police.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the Richmond Police Department at 623-1162.
