EKU host Kentucky High School Mock Trial Tournament

RICHMOND — Eastern Kentucky University is co-host and co-sponsor of the Kentucky High School Mock Trial Tournament that began Friday and concludes Sunday.

The competition started Friday at EKU’s Business and Technology Center.

Model Laboratory School, Madison Central, and Madison Southern were just three of 21 Kentucky schools competing for their chance to advance to the national high school tournament.

The B. Michael Caudill Middle School team, with had won its state championship, also got to competed in the high school tournament because of it had an odd number of teams.

Kristin Clouse, Powell County attorney and Madison Central Mock Trial attorney coach, said that before competition the students practice rules, objections, the actual performance, and think about the case logistically, just like she does in real life.

“They have put in the effort, and they have the heart for it,” said Clouse, a Madison Central graduate.

During the tournament’s first day, all 24 teams were randomly paired for the first round.

Second-round teams are paired according to their won-loss records. Events on Saturday were to take place at the Fayette County District and Circuit courtrooms. The top 10 winners will be announced at the awards banquet Saturday evening.

The championship round will be Sunday at the Fayette County District Courthouse between the two final teams.
