City clarifying Four Mile Avenue name

RICHMOND — Is it Four Mile or Fourmile? Is it an avenue or a road while it’s in the city?

Some city street signs give varying names.

The Richmond City Commission heard first reading Tuesday night of an ordinance to clarify the name of the street that runs from Irvine Street to the Robert R. Martin Bypass. It will be Four Mile Avenue, if the ordinance is adopted on second reading.

Variations in spelling Four Mile have caused confusion, said City Attorney Garrett Fowles. Beyond the city limits, Four Mile is known as a road, but within the city it will be called an avenue.

The ordinance also authorized the posting of signs with the correct name.

In other matters, the commission:

• Accepted the retirements of two police officers, Sgt. F. Don Waldrop, after 20 years, effective May 1; and Maj. Mitch Brown, after 10 years, effective April 1

• Approved the hiring of Hunter Daniel Harrison as a police officer at $17.07 per hour. He is expected to enter the Department of Criminal Justice Training’s 18-week academy in May.

• Contracted with Hope’s Wings Inc. to provide domestic violence victims’ advocate services

• Appointed George H. Robbins as the city’s representative on the Madison County Ambulance Board

• Appointed Jeff Steele, Diana Gordon and John McPhearson to the Richmond Industrial Development Corp. Board

• Approved the five-year lease/purchase from Dever Inc. of 64 E-Z-Go TXT golf carts for the Gibson Bay Golf Course along with three Cushman Hauler 1200 and three Cushman Hauler 800 utility vehicles for $9,690 a month. This year, the lease will run August through October, then May through October from 2015 to 2018 and May through July in 2019.

• Approved the hiring of four seasonal employees for the golf course pro shop and one for its cafe at $7.25 an hour each

• Approved a revised park security officer job description.
