Telford YMCA ending preschool childcare program

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — The Telford YMCA is ending its preschool childcare program Friday.

The decision to close the program was made by the YMCA board of directors on a recommendation from the staff because the program was operating at a “significant financial loss,” CEO Dave Wallace said in a news release.

“This was not an easy decision because it will impact families that we serve as well as members of our team,” Wallace said. “However, this move is necessary for the long-term financial stability of the YMCA.”

Wallace said the YMCA’s childcare program for school-age children will not be closed. Rather, some of the resources used for the preschool program will be used to improve the program for school-age children.

“Going forward, the community can expect the Telford YMCA to deliver a program that, through strategic community partnerships and better facility utilization, makes a serious effort to deliver measurable impact,” Wallace said.

He said one of the improvements will be to develop a program curriculum using the Search Institutes 40 Developmental Assets. The curriculum would focus on academic performance, character development, healthy living and social responsibility, Wallace said.
