Celtic Festival

Irish artistry, energy, food overwhelm arts center

RICHMOND — The artistry and energy of the Emerald Isle took the Richmond Area Arts Center by storm Friday night as RAAC hosted its annual Celtic Festival.

A performance by the McTeggart Irish Dancers of Lexington was sandwiched between two sets by the Labhras Draper Family of Lexington.

Whether those on stage were playing, singing or dancing, those in the audience couldn’t resist getting involved by clapping or stamping their feet to the rhythm of the performers. And audience members with the exuberance of their applause seemed to catch and try to outdo the energy that emanated from the stage.

The dancers ranged in age from preteen to early 20s, and all of them seem driven if not possessed by the spirit of their Celtic ancestors in the synchonized precision and force of their dance steps.

From the smiles on their faces, it was difficult to tell who enjoyed the performances the most, the audience or those on stage.

While music and dance dominated the stage, a different kind of artistry held sway at the performance hall’s other end. Nearly a dozen cooks offered their own versions of Irish stew or shepherd’s pie, incluiding some vegetarian versions. The ample amounts at each station meant that no one should have gone home hungry.

Using the tickets received with their admission, guests got to vote on the best food, with Maggie Kluesner taking home the top prize.
