Following the recommendations of the superintendent search committee, the Madison County School Board has narrowed the applicants to three from a pool of 21.
The candidates are Matthew Constant, Robin Steiner and Elmer Thomas, principal of Madison Central High School.
Constant is an assistant superintendent of technology and federal programs for Owensboro Public Schools. From 2008 to 2011, he served as director of instructional technology in Daviess County Public Schools. From 2005 to 2008, he was principal of Daviess County High School.
Thomas has been Madison Central principal since 2010. From 2004 to 2010, he was principal of Boyle County High School.
Steiner is serving as response to intervention coach at Meadowthorpe Elementary School in Fayette County Schools. She served as assistant superintendent of Kearsarge Regional School District in New Hampshire from 2008 to 2011 and dean of humanities from 1996 to 2008 at Bow High School. From 1990 to 1996, she was a social studies teacher at Kearsarge Regional High School.
The board will conduct two interviews on Friday and one on July 18.
The original search timeline slated July 18 as the date the new superintendent would be named.
However, the announcement will be postponed until the week after the final interview, board chair Mona Isaacs said Wednesday afternoon.
Isaacs said after hearing about the hours of work the search committee put in, the number of references they checked and the thorough process they used to narrow down the number of candidates, she knows the committee members did their due diligence.
“They felt very strongly that these were the three top-notch candidates in the pool,” Isaacs said.
The screening committee consisted of two teachers, Stacy Brockman and Elaine Kresge, who were elected by teachers; one principal, David Gilliam of Madison Southern, who was elected by principals; two parents, Sara Smith and Angie Martin, who were elected by parent-teacher organization presidents; one board member, Becky Coyle, who was appointed by the chair; and one classified employee, Amy Carmichael, who was elected by classified employees.
Coyle, who has been through two other superintendent searches, “reiterated that these are the three best (applicants),” Isaacs said.
During the May 9 school board meeting, the board voted to hire Kentucky School Board Association superintendent search consultant Mike Oder to help guide the board through the process.
The original fee for consulting services was $8,500, but it was reduced to $7,000 at the request of board member Mary Renfro, who asked KSBA to reduce the price at the May 9 meeting. The district created its own brochures and some of the other services usually covered by the comprehensive plan.
One of the search committee members was at that board meeting and was skeptical about the district spending money to hire somebody, but she changed her mind after meeting with Oder, Isaacs said.
“She told me she never left a meeting with any doubt about their decisions and they all walked out feeling like they had done good work,” Isaacs said.
