Sideways Stories from the Wayside School

Performance is noon Friday

RICHMOND — As part of the Richmond Area Arts Council’s series of summer camps, children are participating this week in a theater program conducted by Adam Montague and Justin Doro of the Lexington Children’s Theatre.

The week of rehearsals, costume-fittings and prop creation will conclude with a Friday performance of “Sideways Stories from Wayside School,” based on the popular books by Louis Sachar originally published in 1978.

Friday’s show takes place at noon in the RAAC center, 399 W. Water St. Admission is free.

“Wacky is the normal here,” said Abbie Knapp, 11, trying to explain what makes the Wayside School so interesting. “This is the weirdest school you’ll ever come across.”

Wayside School is 30 stories high, minus the 19th story. One kid has green hair and the cafeteria served a “mushroom surprise” that came alive, Abbie explained.

As soon as she found out about the RAAC camp, she signed up, Abbie said. “I enjoy acting and I love these books.”
