Kentucky State Police are investigating a fire on Dillon Court in Berea, the residence where 18-year-old Brookelyn Shae Farthing was last seen early Saturday morning, according to KSP spokesperson Paul Blanton.
Farthing did not reside in the home, but was reportedly seen there about two hours before the fire.
The KSP distributed a missing person notice Monday morning asking the public’s help to find the Madison Southern High School graduate. Farthing is described as being 5 feet, 1 inch tall with blonde hair and brown eyes.
According to a flyer on Farthing’s Facebook page, the teenager had been wearing a gray Future Farmers of America shirt and light blue-jean shorts and was last seen at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene around 8 a.m. that morning, said Chief Jim Cox of the Madison County Fire Department. The fire originated in a living room couch and the home sustained mostly smoke damage, the chief said.
The homeowner was attempting to extinguish the fire with a water hose when the Red Lick Volunteer Fire Department arrived, said Cox, who was uncertain if the homeowner was inside the home when the fire started.
No human remains were found at the home, but investigators are still searching the scene, Blanton said. “We want to rule everything out.”
Some of Farthing’s property was found in the home; items “she would not normally be without,” Blanton said.
Farthing’s family visited the home Saturday to collect her things, he said.
Television news reported that the home had no electricity and that her stepfather, Randal Walker said, “To see her luggage left there. That’s not right. She wouldn’t leave that behind, at least not intentionally.”
KSP arson investigator Detective Pat Alford is probing the fire but has not released a statement.
Although Farthing is 18 and may “go missing if she wants to,” Blanton said the KSP “errs on the side of caution.”
“As soon as someone is reported missing, we begin the investigation,” he said.
Anyone with information on Farthing’s whereabouts is asked to contact KSP at (859) 623-2404 or toll free at (800) 222-5555.
