Farmers’ market has ‛excellent’ opening day

RICHMOND — March came in like a lamb Saturday, even if the weather started to roar by Sunday night.

Dozens of consumers and several local farmers and artisans who are ready for spring took advantage of Saturday’s warm, fair weather for the opening of Richmond’s Downtown Farmers’ Market.

Although fresh produce is still weeks away, Lucky Clover Farm had some sweet potatoes and butternut squash from its cellar for sale.

The ladies of Four Sisters Farm had soap products made from goats’ milk. Goats, which have to be milked twice a day, produce year around.

Nearly 20 people who want to grow their own produce attended a seminar on “Creative Container Gardening.”

Hotdog and kettle corn vendors were on hand and singer/guitarist Andy Rucker entertained the crowd.

The market will be open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Saturday, said Rose Rex, Richmond Downtown Coordinator.

“This was an excellent start” for a farmers’ market so early in the year, Rex said, “and it will only get better.”
