Learning while playing: St. Mark students build fish with ‘Bricks 4 Kidz’

Read Across America Week

RICHMOND — To celebrate Dr. Seuss’ book “One Fish  Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,” St. Mark Catholic School students, in every grade, built LEGO fish Thursday with Tracy Morris of Bricks 4 Kidz.

Throughout the day, grade levels took turns working with LEGO kits to create their own fish. Each kit contained about 34 different pieces that can be turned into more than 100 different models.

“The hardest part is picking which model to create,” Morris said.

Each session began with an age-appropriate lesson about fish, and then students were given instructions and LEGO kits to create their own fish.

A group of fourth- and fifth-graders created fish with moving joints, and when connected to a battery, it would flap its tail back and forth. Students worked in pairs and raced to finish first.

Designed by engineers and architects, Bricks 4 Kidz project kits feature a variety of themes.

To celebrate Read Across America Day, St. Mark students enjoyed an entire week of activities, including crazy “Fox in Socks” day and “Who-hair” day.

Students read “The Lorax” and watched the movie. They also read the “Butter Battle Book” and engaged in role play to study character development.

Friday, teachers dressed as characters and read stories while students got a visit from the Cat in the Hat.
