April 1 is deadline for third-party, independent candidate filings

Register Staff Report

MADISON COUNTY — Although the deadline has passed for Democratic and Republican candidates to register for local and state races, people interested in running as third-party or independent candidates can still file.

The last day for independents and others to declare for the partisan races, such as county and state offices, is April 1, according to Madison County Clerk Kenny Barger.

The statement-of-candidacy form must be properly filled out and turned in at his office at the county courthouse by 4 p.m. that day.

Those candidates then have until Aug. 1 to submit 100 signatures to the clerk in order to be placed on the ballot, Barger said.

This does not apply to nonpartisan races, such as elective offices for Richmond and Berea.

People interested in becoming write-in candidates must officially declare their intentions to run by 4 p.m. Oct. 24.

Upcoming nonpartisan race deadline

The deadline to file in the Berea City Council and Madison County School Board races is Aug. 12.

Two spots on the five-person county school board are up for election this year.

School board Districts 3 and 4, represented by Mona Isaacs and Mary Renfro, respectively, will be decided in the fall. No one yet has filed in these nonpartisan races.

Renfro won election in 2012 to fill the remaining two years of board member Doug Whitlock’s term after he resigned. She filed earlier this month to run as Democrat for county magistrate District 2.

School board terms are for four years.
