Girl Scout cookies are here

Volunteers unload 26,000 packages

RICHMOND — The lobby of Vineyard Community Church (in Richmond Mall) was full Thursday, but not for a worship service.

Girl Scout troop leaders, parents and volunteers were busy Thursday morning unloading and sorting 26,000 cookie packages slated for distribution by nearly 50 Richmond-area troops.

And this was only Richmond’s first shipment, said Kristy Burton, Madison County cookie manager for Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council.

Caramel deLites are definitely Richmond’s favorite cookie, she said, noting the extra-large delivery of the donut-shaped favorite covered with caramel, toasted coconut and chocolaty stripes.

Beginning today, Girl Scouts will set up cookie booths at Kroger and Lowe’s Home Improvements from 4 to 7 p.m. The booths also will be set up at those two locations from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Beginning Feb. 1, a cookie booth will be set up at the Richmond Walmart from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

That schedule will continue for all locations every weekend through March 16, Burton said, but with one exception.

On Feb. 1, Girl Scouts will not sell cookies at Kroger, but will ask for donations from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to aid local domestic violence shelters, such as Hope’s Wings, in the annual Shop & Share event.

Shop & Share is a joint initiative of First Lady Jane Beshear, Kroger, the Kentucky Domestic Violence Association, Girl Scouts and several other clubs and organizations, to collect needed goods and funds for 15 domestic violence shelters across the state.

Some needed items include cleaning supplies, canned foods, toilet paper and soap.

Look for cookie booths at other local businesses, such as Belk, JCPenny and Michael’s, on most weekends, Burton said.

Cookies also can be ordered by calling Burton at 859-200-4489.
