Former mayor files for commission

Gregg jumps in jailer’s race

RICHMOND — Former Richmond Mayor Bill Strong, who also has served as a city commissioner and county magistrate, filed Friday seeking to return to the commission.

“As the time grows closer to the election, I haven’t seen a lot of interest in the commissioner’s race,” Strong said in a Facebook announcement of his candidacy. “This is a very important time for our city and the days we are facing in the future. Serious decisions are going to have to be made. I have been in constant contact with city government and stayed involved over the years in and out of office. The city can use my knowledge and experience.”

Strong said he is excited at the prospect of returning to public service.

His most recent term in an elected position was as a commissioner from 2007 to 2010. However, he has nearly 20 years experience on Richmond’s legislative body, four years on the fiscal court and four years as mayor.

RPD major files for jailer

Republican Steven W. Gregg has thrown his hat into the ring for the jailer’s race.

A major with the Richmond Police Department, Gregg has been employed by the city for 28 years, and he ran unsuccessfully for jailer in 2010. He worked as a deputy jailer and a Winchester police officer before moving to Madison County. He also served as a commander over border police for the United Nations International Police during the war in Kosovo from 1999 to 2003.

In a candidacy announcement on Facebook, Gregg said if elected he would ensure that inmates have access to several different programs, including drug rehabilitation, education, domestic violence classes and religious guidance. He also said he would utilize identification wristbands to keep better track of inmates.

As the only Republican filed so far, Gregg will face one of three Democrats in the general election, including incumbent Doug Thomas, Steve Tussey or Andre Patterson.
