Local ordinances limit times for fireworks

MADISON COUNTY — Fireworks are a traditional way to celebrate the Fourth of July, but they can also be dangerous and annoy the neighbors.

The Kentucky Fire Commission urges everyone who celebrates with fireworks to follow safety instructions on fireworks packages and to obey local ordinances.

Richmond and Berea city ordinances limit when fireworks may be set off, buy they allow extended hours around the holiday.

Large firework displays are not permitted by either city without a permit signed by both the mayor and the fire chief.

The two ordinances also flesh out the guidelines for firing consumer fireworks, which Kentucky defines as small ground-based fireworks suitable for use by the public.

According to the ordinances, consumer fireworks may be ignited only between the hours of 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., except July 3 and 4, Memorial Day and New Year’s Eve when the limit is extended to midnight.

The ordinances also allows no one under the age of 18 to ignite any fireworks, and no fireworks are to be ignited within 200 feet of a structure.

Anyone convicted of violating the ordinances will be guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to a fine between $50 and $500.

“Although fireworks are fun, we forget we’re dealing with explosives that we have little to no control over,” said Kentucky Fire Commission Executive Director Ronnie Day. “It is best to leave them to the professionals.”
