Heroin seized at EKU apartment

Two arrested

MADISON COUNTY — Executing a search warrant May 13 at Eastern Kentucky University’s Brockton Apartments, Berea police seized 79 grams of heroin and arrested two people.

This may have been the largest heroin seizure in Madison County for many years, according to Sgt. Jake Reed, Berea Police Department spokesperson. He estimated the street value of the drug at $9,000 to $10,000.

Arrested were: Neal Stone, 38, an EKU student majoring in paralegal studies, and Cathrine Leake, 27, both of Bardstown.

Leake and Stone were both charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance.

News of the bust was not released for more than a month because the investigation continued after the arrests, Reed explained

While BPD was the lead agency in the investigation, the Richmond and EKU police departments and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office assisted in executing the warrant and making the arrests, he added.

Along with the heroin, digital scales and $520 in cash also were recovered.

Both Leake and Stone were taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

While she was being booked at the jail, Leake attempted to conceal a small rock of heroin in her hand, Reed said.

Leake also was then charged with tampering with physical evidence. Stone faces an additional charge of drug paraphernalia possession.

Both are free on bond. Stone was released May 19 while Leake was released June 5, according to the jail’s online records.
