Bluegrass Christian School closes

RICHMOND — Bluegrass Christian School did not get enough enrollment contracts by June 30, and its board of directors has decided to cease operations.

The school will be dissolved Aug. 1., according to a Tuesday statement from the six-member board.

Families may pick up transcripts, records and prepaid tuition or application fees the week of July 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the statement added.

Anyone who cannot go by the school on Pin Oak Drive during those hours were instructed to email Dr. Bonita Cobb, headmaster, at bonita.cobb@bcsky.org.

In addition to releasing it to the Richmond Register, the school posted the announcement on its Facebook page.

In late May, after only 20 students enrolled, the directors voted to close the school unless an enrollment of 30 could be assured by the end of June. When that goal was not reached, they decided to go ahead with the closure.

The school had about 40 students this past year, the headmaster said in early June. Annual tuition was $4,500, which was a struggle for the parents of most students to pay, Cobb told the Register then.

The school was started about 12 years ago after an earlier school, Richmond Christian Academy, closed.

Bluegrass Christian’s enrollment declined in recent years. It stood at almost 130 in May 2009, but had fallen to about 110 at the end of the next year. In August 2011, only about 60 enrolled had enrolled, according to past Richmond Register stories.
