Madison Central teacher to perform tonight on NBC’s “The Sing-Off”

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — The assistant director of the Madison Central High School choir will be performing on national television tonight.

Mike Owens will be performing with the a cappella group, the AcoUstiKats, at 9 p.m. on the premiere episode of NBC’s “The Sing-Off.” The group will be competing against nine other a cappella groups for the top prizes of a Sony Music recording contract and $100,000.

Viewers will be able to vote for their favorite group.

Owens is a 2012 graduate of the University of Kentucky and works with MCHS Choir Director Lisa Jury.

The AcoUstiKats is a male a cappella group from the University of Kentucky, Owens said in an email.

“I was lucky enough to be with the ensemble for five years before graduating with two bachelor’s degrees and taking my current teaching position at MCHS,” Owens said.

The AcoUstiKats tried out for “The Sing-Off” in Nashville in the spring and were the only a cappella group from that site’s audition to be selected to go to the next round. The groups selected for the summer taping were not allowed to share much about their experience until now.

Owens encouraged Madison Countians to watch the show and support the local group.

“We definitely need your support and I, personally, want to represent Madison County in the best way possible,” Owens said. “I am the only bass in the group, so be sure to listen for those low notes.”

“The Sing-Off” is hosted by Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees, and ensembles are critiqued by celebrity judges Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men and Jewel.
