Kentucky River Sweep is Saturday

RICHMOND — The 22nd annual Kentucky River Sweep will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday around the beach at Ft. Boonesborough State Park

The Kentucky River Authority in conjunction with the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission is hosting the annual Kentucky River cleanup.

Volunteers will pick up trash and debris only the river across 20 counties, said Sue Elliston cleanup coordinator. Trash bags will be provided and volunteers will receive T-shirts and be fed lunch.

Elliston said the cleanup is a way for volunteers to take pride in their community and improve its environment.

Last year, about 665 people helped clean up nearly 120 miles of shoreline, collecting more than 6,000 pounds of trash.

While there is less trash scattered along the riverbanks today than was the case more than two decades ago, there is still plenty of work to do, said Pat Banks of the Kentucky Riverkeeper.
