Status of fire-affected buildings upgraded

RICHMOND — The Richmond Fire Department has removed signs prohibiting entry into two downtown buildings affected by a July 8 fire, but they still are not ready for habitation.

Renovation and additional inspection will be required before the buildings can return to normal use, Fire Chief Buzzy Campbell said Monday.

Repair of the buildings could take about three weeks, he estimated.

The building most affected housed the MexiHollywood restaurant.

A third building received some damage, but entry into it was never prohibited after the fire.

Arson is not suspected in the fire that destroyed a multi-level wooden deck attached to the back of the restaurant building. However, Campbell said he was not ready to say what caused the fire.

He would not comment on speculation that a charcoal grill started the blaze.

A determination of cause must wait until a Kentucky State Police Fire Investigator has examined the scene, the chief said.

State law requires the KSP inspection, which sometimes can be done remotely, Campbell said. But he has requested an on-site inspection because of the affected buildings’ high value.

Firefighters rescued two people from an apartment in the restaurant building and quickly extinguished the flames that consumed the wooden deck.
