All-day kindergarten details available on district webpage

Informational meeting scheduled tonight

RICHMOND — At its Nov. 14 meeting, the Madison County School Board voted 4-1 to adopt a kindergarten implementation plan recommended by Superintendent Elmer Thomas. But to make room for the anticipated influx of students, the plan included several changes.

The district created a page on its website to answer some of the questions parents/caregivers may have regarding the changes. (Visit www.madison.kyschools.us and choose “All-Day Kindergarten” in the left-hand column).

To start all-day kindergarten in August, and to also stay within the confines of the budget, Thomas said the only “viable option” was to open four kindergarten academies at Waco, Kingston, Shannon Johnson and Mayfield elementary schools.

Mayfield would close as a school and reopen as an academy to house kindergarten students from White Hall, Kit Carson, Glenn Marshall, Daniel Boone and Kirksville elementary zones.

Mayfield students will be reassigned to other Richmond-area elementary schools, so the webpage provides a link to a full listing of streets and the schools those streets will be assigned to attend in August.

A “Frequently Asked Questions” section answers questions one may have pertaining to a certain school. All 10 elementary schools are listed, as well as an option to read about preschool.

On the right-hand side of the webpage, a link is available to preregister students for kindergarten. This will give the district a better idea of how many students to expect, Thomas said.

Because the Madison County Schools has an open enrollment policy, parents/caregivers may fill out a change in school assignment form if they wish to send their child to an elementary school other than the school assigned. A link to the form can be found on this page or in school offices.

A link also is provided in the right-hand column to a listing of school start and end times, which vary from school to school.

An all-day kindergarten informational meeting is scheduled 6 p.m. Monday, in the Madison Middle School auditorium.
