Hog butchering class Saturday at Berea College Farm Store

BEREA — Instructor Justin Dean will show class participants how to make use of each piece of a hog from snout to tail in a hog butchering class scheduled 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Berea College Farm Store, 311 N. Main St.

Dean will demonstrate butchering techniques, explain the best cooking method for each cut and offer curing tips and recipes to make the most of the meat.

While also a place to sell produce grown by students, the farm store is equipped with a learning laboratory, which can be viewed through a large window while shopping.

Registration is $50 and is limited to 10. Call 985-3685 for reservations.

Art history now adorns walls

Coleman “Coley” Ogg, a traveling photographer between 1880 and 1940, specialized in photographing and documenting the everyday lives of mountain people.

Ogg spent a lot of time capturing images in and around Berea, including the Berea College Farm. Several of those images are now displayed on the walls of the farm store, courtesy of Ogg’s granddaughter Kathryn Freeman.

A copy of Freeman’s book, “Ogg Land: The Rediscovered Photographs of C.I. Ogg,” is available for viewing at the store.
