After the success of last year’s first Madison County Community Holiday Celebration, Rev. Howard Miller said he and his organizing committee are setting the stage for even more community participation.
The free concert is scheduled 3 p.m. on Dec. 15 at the EKU Center for the Arts.
Soloists, church and civic groups, choirs and instrumentalists have all signed on to participate, Miller said. But, to keep the concert within 90 minutes, some of the performers will be combined into groups to give the concert more of a “choir feel.”
This will give each group an opportunity to perform three or four songs. There will still be individual acts, but not as many as last year, Howard said.
Risers, a piano, electronic keyboards, drum sets and amplifiers will be provided for all groups to use.
“Both those who were involved and those who attended seemed to really enjoy the program last year,” he said. “We want to continue this on an annual basis, and we want to continue to make it interesting.”
Miller said last year’s event brought the community together and everyone had “high holiday spirit ― we’re looking to expand on that.”
The event will feature some new acts this year, but also some who performed last year, such as the B. Michael Caudill Middle School Band and the choirs from Full Gospel Tabernacle and White Oak Pond Christian Church.
Howard is already thinking ahead to next year’s holiday show, and hopes to perhaps develop the community’s talents into a musical or some sort of theater production, he said.
“I’m inviting the entire community to sit and enjoy an evening of entertainment, musical fellowship and time with neighbors, family and friends,” the reverend said.
As an Eastern Kentucky University alum and a lifelong Richmond resident, Miller came up with the idea for the event last year with the hope it will open the door to “greater campus and community participation.”
