Madison County veterans to host Memorial Day ceremonies

MADISON COUNTY — The Madison County Veterans Association, which includes a number of local veterans’ organizations, will be hosting two Memorial Day ceremonies Monday.

The first will take place at the Richmond Cemetery near the flagpole at 10 a.m., and the second will follow at noon in Madison County Memorial Gardens on Berea Road.

Everett King of the American Legion, which is coordinating this year’s events, said U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Sixth District, will be present at the morning ceremony.

Every year the Memorial Day event has a theme. Last year’s theme was honoring Vietnam veterans, King said, while this year’s theme is honoring all American soldiers.

“We’re paying tribute to anyone who has worn the uniform and served,” King said.

Throughout the day veterans, along with Girl Scouts and members of the Young Marines, will be placing American flags at the graves of veterans across the county.

Madison County Memorial Gardens has donated more than 750 flags to the Veterans Association, which King said was very helpful.

“Memorial Gardens has been extremely helpful with this event,” he said.

During the ceremony, the national colors will be posted. The young marines will set up a helmet memorial with dog tags and boots, and a singer will perform the national anthem and “Amazing Grace.”

“We want to get the word out that the community is invited to this event,” King said. “It's not just for veterans. We’d like to get a lot of community participation.”
