Berea LIFE invites community to forum about local food

BEREA — A Berea group is inviting residents who want to see increased access to local food or to learn about how doing so could benefit the community to participate in the Berea Community Food Forum.

The forum will be 7 p.m. Aug. 1 at Berea Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

The event is being organized by Berea Locally Integrated Food Economy, a subgroup of the Berea Economic Advancement Team focused on finding ways to localize Berea’s food economy. Co-sponsors of the event include Community Farm Alliance, Berea Coffee & Tea, Happy Meadow Natural Foods, Moore’s Grocery and Three Fold Meats.

Berea LIFE members and volunteers have spent months conducting a Community Food System Assessment to compile a community food profile, including statistics and perceptions on food accessibility in Berea. With the community food profile at hand, Berea LIFE hopes to identify achievable goals and inform decisions about how to localize Berea’s food system.

Members of Berea LIFE will open the forum by giving a presentation on the CFSA and what has been found so far. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion featuring local farmers, business owners and representatives from other organizations that play a role in the local food system. Finally, community members will be invited to ask any questions or bring up any concerns they might have. This discussion will help guide the work in the final months of the assessment. Everyone in the community is encouraged to participate in this discussion.

The forum is free and open to the public. Light refreshments from local farmers and businesses will be served.
