Richmond Planning Commission to address zone change allowing new apartments

RICHMOND — Richmond's Planning and Zoning Commission heard a proposal at their last meeting, July 16, to rezone 316 Spangler Drive from B-3 to R-3, which would allow apartments to be built on the lot.

Planning Commission Chair David Rush said the lot had been vacant for a long time, and he expected the commission to approve the change.

“There were some concerns with businesses being nearby, as well as other housing, although they're mostly duplexes,” Rush said.

Rush said the commission also discussed the fact that Mayor Jim Barnes had said he didn't want any more apartment complexes built in the city. However, Rush said he still expected the commission to vote on the matter soon.

“If they work out the things we told them to change, it will probably be on the agenda for Thursday,” Rush said.

He said the changes suggested by the commission were largely technical, and weren't very major.

The next planning commission meeting is scheduled Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 239 W. Main St.
