The weather may have been too chilly and damp Friday morning for children to enjoy Richmond’s new universal playground.
But despite the weather, scores of adults who had dreamed, planned and raised funds for years to make the playground a reality gathered in Lake Reba Park to celebrate making it a reality.
Local donations, totaling $48,000, and in-kind work by the city matched a federal grant of $50,000 to build the playground, which can be enjoyed by children of virtually any ability, said Erin Moore of the parks and recreation department.
The Richmond Civitan Club and the city’s two Rotary Clubs raised the most funds for the project, but other organizations, churches, businesses and individuals contributed.
Among the playground’s features is no-ramp access to equipment and a spongy surface to prevent injuries from falls.
