King registers for Richmond mayor’s race

Combs not seeking judge/executive job

RICHMOND — Richmond City Commissioner Laura King was one of the candidates to file Nov. 6  as a candidate for the 2014 elections.

Nov. 6 was the first day candidates could file.

King will be seeking the seat now held by Jim Barnes. Barnes has not yet filed for office, and told the Richmond Register he was not certain he wants to run again and would like to get through the holidays before worrying about a campaign.

Barnes can wait, however, as candidates have until 4 p.m. Jan. 28 to file in the nonpartisan city election.

Jan. 28 also is the deadline to enter the Democratic or Republican primaries for county races. Independent candidates in county races have until 4 p.m. Aug. 12 to file. That also is the deadline for candidates running for Berea mayor or city council, which are nonpartisan races.

Combs no longer seeking judge/executive position

County Magistrate Larry Combs, who in July announced plans to run for Madison County judge/executive, has decided instead to try and keep his current seat.

I have some family matters to take care of and the time wasn’t right for me,” Combs said. “My momma and daddy are still alive, and with the passing of my brother it’s all up to me to take care of them.”

Combs has represented southern Madison County and the city of Berea for 32 years. He is being challenged in the primary by fellow Democrats Brad Hylton and Berea City Council member Ronnie Terrill.

He also faces potential opposition from Brian Combs, his nephew, who has filed to run as a Republican.

He’s a good boy,” Larry Combs said of Brian. “I welcome all challenges, that’s what makes these races interesting.”

Other candidates filed as of Tuesday afternoon are:

• County judge/executive:  Republicans Reagan Taylor and Duane Curry will face each other in the primary. Incumbent Democrat Kent Clark has not yet filed for re-election, but in a July interview with the Register he said he had “every intention of running.”

• Fiscal Court: Democrat John C. Tudor is running for magistrate in District 3, now represented by Republican Billy Ray Hughes. Democrat Robert John Harris is seeking Republican Greg King’s District 4 seat. Neither Hughes nor King have filed, but King announced in July he intends to run for judge/executive.

• Jailer: At least two Democrats will be vying for the position of jailer. Incumbent Doug Thomas is up against hopeful Steve Tussey in the primary election.

• Sheriff: Mike Coyle has filed as a Democrat to run for a full term as sheriff and currently is unopposed. Coyle was appointed by Clark to serve the remainder of former Sheriff Jerry Combs’ term after Combs’ death earlier this year.

• County clerk: Republican incumbent Kenny Barger is seeking re-election and has not yet been challenged.

• Constables: Three incumbents have filed to retain their positions as constables. Democrat J.B. Marcum is seeking re-election in District 1. Republican Steven J. Kelly is running in District 2, and Democrat Bruce Thomas has filed for District 3.

Digging for 20 ton, 6 by 7 foot concrete box culverts will begin today, if weather permits, said Jason Hart, Richmond’s director of Planning and Zoning. The culverts will help reduce the likelihood of flooding on Water Street by carrying storm water under Main Street, the CVS parking lot and Irvine Street to a stream, he said.
