Kirksville Elementary School was the site of a happy reunion Monday morning as students and teachers crowded into the gym to celebrate Veterans Day.
After the morning’s program had ended, second-grader Addison Hoaglin was surprised by the arrival of her older brother, Jordan Barnett.
Barnett is serving in the military but is on leave until his deployment in December.
He had just come home to spend time with his family.
During the morning program, students sang the national anthem, shared quotes about veterans from famous political leaders and listened to a speech from Staff Sgt. Doraine “Buck” Adkins.
The soldier explained to the students what a veteran is, and why Veterans Day is so important.
He said the best way for young people to show their appreciation to veterans is to be good students. Veterans served to ensure the next generation could be free to get a good education.
