Human remains found at fire scene

Register Staff Report

RICHMOND — Human remains were found Thursday morning in the debris of a Whitlock Road home that was destroyed Sept. 26 by a fire of suspicious origin.

Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison said he and Deputy Coroner Carlos Coyle joined the search Thursday morning, and the coroner transported the remains to the state Medical Examiner’s Office, which is attempting to identify them.

Walter Liebengood, the homeowner, was last seen at his home the evening prior to the fire. State police, who had been searching the scene with the help of county firefighters and the state Fire Marshal’s Office, listed him as a missing person Sept. 27.

A KSP news release announcing the discovery did not include a cause of the fire, but described it as being of suspicious origin.

KSP Detective Rob Morris and Arson Investigator Pat Alford led the investigation.
