RICHMOND — Runners, walkers and a few catching rides in strollers will get “Color Me Crazy” next Saturday, April 5, for the second Color of Maroon 5K at Eastern Kentucky University.

Event-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by Zumba at 9 a.m. with the race starting at 10 a.m. at the EKU Intramural Softball Complex.

Partial proceeds from the event will benefit the Special Olympics of Kentucky and Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Bluegrass.

In November, more than 1,000 participants made the cold trek through campus during the first Color of Maroon 5K. They started out with clean white shirts (some in tutus) but ended up covered in splashes of green, yellow, red and blue powder by the end of the course.

“With ‘Color Me Crazy’ as our theme, if you come out with white still left on your shirt, you did it wrong,” said organizer Kevin Morgan.

The event will feature all new color stations, color blasters and a route that weaves throughout the entire campus, he said.

Morgan helped start the event in the fall with the revival of the EKU Runner’s Club. He interned last summer for an organization that produced similar events in the region, and by the time he returned for his senior year, he was ready to make it happen at EKU.

More than 750 participants have signed up already, but more are expected to join on race day, he said.

Registration packets are $25 for university students; $30 for EKU faculty, staff, alumni, military and Model Laboratory School students; and $35 for the community. Discounted prices are available through online registration, which closes Thursday at 6 p.m. (

Registration packets include a T-shirt, sunglasses, parking (in front of the EKU Fitness & Wellness Center, Van Hoose Drive), free food courtesy of Chick-fil-A of the Richmond Centre and one color packet.

Long-sleeve T-shirts, Color Me Crazy tanks tops and T-shirts, sunglasses, headbands and color packets also will be for sale.

Morgan recommends that participants register early to guarantee a T-shirt and packet. It also is recommended that participants arrive no later than 9 a.m. for parking on Van Hoose Drive, which will be closed to all incoming and outgoing traffic by 9:45 a.m.

The event is sponsored by EKU Campus Recreation and Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Follow the event’s social media pages at, Twitter @COM5K and Instagram @COM5K.
