BEREA — The annual Local Foods Expo, sponsored by Sustainable Berea, has outgrown its humble beginnings, a workshop with 40 attendees five years ago.
This year’s event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on the lawn of the Berea Welcome Center (old L&N Depot) in Old Town on Broadway.
Last year’s event, which took place at Berea College, drew nearly 20 vendors and about 350 participants.
Saturday’s event was moved to its new location to provide space for even more vendors and visitors, according to organizers.
“The space will accommodate the old-fashioned cake-walk. There is electricity for the mushroom log demonstration and a PA system for the pie auction,” said Gail Gilles, Sustainable Berea treasurer, in a news release. “Many of the booths will be under the City’s Big Tent on the front lawn.”
The city trolley is scheduled to bring people from Old Town to the Berea College Farm Store and the Berea College Gardens where food and plants also will be for sale, according to the release.
Other events and vendors planned are:
• People can bring their knives and garden tools to be sharpened by Steve Parsley, cutler with the Kilted Crow Knife and Tool Company.
• The Madison County Beekeepers Association will have an educational booth, and Matt Wilson, Organic Production Coordinator of Berea College Farms, will talk to people about raising bees in a top-bar hive.
• Shane Garver, of Garver Farms, will be selling blueberry bushes and answering the many questions he routinely gets from people trying to grow blueberries.
• The Lazy 8 Stock Farm and Salamander Springs Farm will both be available to talk about their CSAs, while Kenny’s Cheese and Clementine’s bakery will be selling their products.
• Robin Reed from Appalachian Crafts Farm will be on hand with his mushroom spores and electric drill to demonstrate inoculation for mushrooms logs (and they will be for sale).
• Local food vendors will provide sandwiches and drinks.
• Montgomery Farm and Garden, the Potting Shed and and Sticks and Stones will have booths to provide a range of plants, supplies and dirt for gardening.
Sustainable Berea also will be selling raised beds, native cedar lumber cut in planks ready for assembly for raised beds, rain barrels and raw barrels for do-it-yourself barrels, The Adopt-A-Potato Recipe Book and Growing Guide, the Local Recipe Book from the 100-mile potlucks, cloth SB bags, and SB memberships. There will also be a full table of informational pamphlets for free.
