RICHMOND — The Kentucky State Police are investigating a fire Thursday that destroyed a Richmond apartment, reporting that the blaze was “suspicious in nature.”

Several McDaniel Drive residents spent three hours outside this morning as Richmond firefighters extinguished a blaze in an apartment building off South Killarney Lane.

All four city fire stations responded at 4:03 a.m. to 211 McDaniel Drive, Apt. 8, where an apartment had caught fire.

“It still had the occupant's things in it,” said Richmond Fire Chief Buzzy Campbell. “He was out of town. The entire apartment was totally destroyed.”

A bit of smoke crept into the building’s attic, but no fire damage was done to adjacent apartments, the chief said. The building has eight apartments.

“After the fire was extinguished, the initial investigation revealed the fire was suspicious in nature,” said Trooper Paul Blanton, Post 7 public affairs officer, in a news release. “Arson investigator Pat Alford was contacted to continue the investigation.”

Residents were allowed back into their apartments at 7 a.m., but the 18 firefighters did not leave the scene until 9 a.m., Campbell said.

“During the course of this investigation Detective Alford has received information that there were several individuals seen in the area just prior to the fire being noticed,” Blanton said.
