Scam calls threaten residents with arrest

RICHMOND — Richmond police are warning the community that someone purporting to be with the Lexington police department is calling people and telling them there is a warrant out for their arrest because they didn’t appear for jury duty.

A Kent Street resident reported Saturday that she had received a telephone call from a person who said he was a lieutenant with the Lexington police, according to the RPD report.

The caller told the complainant she had missed jury duty and a warrant had been issued for her arrest. The woman was told that she must obtain a $450 Green Dot prepaid debit card and bring it to court.

The caller told the Richmond resident she must get the card within the hour and also asked her to provide her cell phone number.

The complainant because suspicious, hung up and called Richmond police.

“This scam is similar, if not the same, as the one reported by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office within the past week,” RPD Chief Larry Brock said in the news release.

Kentuckians can only serve on juries in counties in which they are residents, according to Madison Circuit Judge Jean C. Logue. Also, judges do not typically issue arrest warrants if a person does not show up for jury duty.

Instead, a “show cause” summons is issued and delivered to the person by a sheriff’s deputy. The person must then appear in court to explain to the judge why he did not show up to jury duty, Logue said. It is extremely rare to arrest anyone for not appearing for jury duty, she added.
