International group inspects chemical weapons at depot

RICHMOND — A team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) visited the chemical activity at the Blue Grass Army Depot this past week to perform a systematic stockpile inspection.

The inspectors assured accountability of every chemical weapon declared to be in storage at the depot as part of United States compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), according to a news release from the activity.

The team included representatives from the United Kingdom, Ukraine, the Russian Federation, France, Serbia and Montenegro, all of whom were escorted by members of the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

The United State signed the CWC treaty in 1997, and agreed to destroy all of its chemical weapons and former production facilities, as well as halt the development, use, production and acquisition of chemical weapons.

The compliance with this treaty is another facet of the safe and secure storage mission at the depot, the release stated.

More detials about the CWC and OPCW may be found at www.opcw.org.
