Model calls off Tuesday classes

County, Berea had already canceled

RICHMOND — After originally planning on a two-hour delayed start Tuesday, Model Laboratory School called off classes for the day.

“Because of continued arctic temperatures and a downed heating system at Model, we decided to cancel school for Tuesday,” said Marc Whitt, spokesperson for Eastern Kentucky University, which operates Model.

The announcement came around 9 a.m.

"Our coal fired boiler is down at the heat plant," Whitt said. "We anticipate the boiler to be re fired approximately midmorning. However, it will take several hours before the heat is back up. Buildings on the north side of campus will be affected.

EKU does not start its spring semester until Jan. 13..

On Monday evening, Madison County Schools and Berea Community Schools decided to cancel classes for Tuesday.
