Upward Bound and Cope ministries moving to St. Joseph Berea hospital

Open house is Jan. 3, 4

BEREA — A nonprofit ministry that helps people with drug, alcohol and behavioral problems and their families has relocated to St. Joseph hospital in Berea.

To celebrate its new facility, Upward Bound Ministry and Cope Ministry is hosting an open house from noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 3 and Jan. 4. The offices are in the basement of the old hospital and parking is available in the back, according to Cope Ministry volunteer Debra King.

Upward Bound Ministry got its start locally in 1998 by founders Darnell and Corene Hill. It met until 2003 at the Richmond Parks & Recreation Building, then at the Church on the Rock in Berea.

“We function on confidentiality,” King said.

The volunteers are not licensed counselors, however they do use their personal life experiences and work-related training to counsel with people who are trying to overcome their problems. Upward Bound Ministry and Cope Ministry is not a 12-step program but is a faith-based meeting, King said.

“We try to help people learn why they function the way they do,” King said.

The Cope Ministry helps family members deal with the abuse of their love one’s behavior who is suffering from drug and alcohol problems. Starting Jan. 2, the group will meet weekly from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Berea hospital.

In the future, meetings may be scheduled twice a week.

People who would like to use the services offered by Upward Bound Ministry and Cope Ministry do not have to make an appointment before coming to the office, King said.

“The need is great in Madison County” for their services, King added.

King said the rise in heroin addiction is creating a new category of problems as dependency on painkiller medications lessens.
