Man indicted on attempted murder charge

RICHMOND — A Richmond man is facing a plethora of charges, including attempted murder, in connection with three incidents in Madison County.

A Madison grand jury indicted Stewart Mitchell Ballew, 21, in three cases spanning a year and a half.

In the most recent case, Ballew is accused of firing a handgun Oct. 16 into a vehicle parked at the Redi Mart on Irvine Road while it was occupied by Carlos Walker, according to the indictment.

The shooter missed the Walker, but two bullets struck his windshield, and he suffered a minor injury from flying glass, according to a Richmond police report.

Police allege that Ballew then fled in a vehicle that was later found near the White House Clinic in Estill County by Kentucky State Police officers. The KSP detained Ballew and returned him to Richmond, where he was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.

Ballew also was indicted on five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for the risk of death or serious injury to bystanders at the gas station, and one count each of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and second-degree persistent felony offender.

Because of the persistent felony-offender enhancement, Ballew could face a sentence of 20 to 50 years or life in prison if he is convicted of attempted murder.

In the second indictment, Ballew was charged with theft of identity, second-degree fleeing police and second-degree persistent felony offender.

Ballew is accused of fleeing from police on foot Aug. 5 and telling police he was his brother when he was eventually apprehended, the indictment stated.

In the third case, the grand jury indicted Ballew on three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and second-degree persistent felony offender.

On July 10, 2012, Ballew is accused of shooting a handgun in the air while confronting two men and a juvenile.

Ballew is scheduled for arraignment at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 5 in Madison Circuit Court.
