RICHMOND — Two patrons of Motel 7 off Lexington Road near Cracker Barrel were injured at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday when a set of external stairs collapsed.

The part that broke away was the lower end of the stairs that connected a landing near the third floor to a second floor balcony, according to Richmond Fire Chief Buzzy Campbell.

The two women were both transported by ambulance to the Baptist Health-Richmond hospital, said Carlos Coyle, assistant director of Madison County EMS. One woman was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center for further treatment.

Coyle said he could not release the victims' names or the extent of their injuries, except to say the injuries weren’t life-threatening.

The stairway was cordoned off after the accident, and a Richmond fire marshal and the city’s codes enforcement director inspected the facility Wednesday. A report was being sent to the state fire marshal who has juridiction over hotel stairways, Campbell said.
