Register staff report
James M. Ward, 40, of McKee died about 11:17 a.m. Saturday after his car left the southbound lane of Interstate 75 at mile marker 84 and traveled about 200 feet down an embankment and crashed into a rocky ravine.
The Madison County Rescue Squad was able to extricate Ward’s body from his badly mangled vehicle only after it was winched from the ravine in which it became wedged, said Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison.
Based on witness statements and the distance the vehicle traveled after leaving the road, Cornelison said speed was a likely factor in the mishap. The accident remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
Ward, who was divorced, leaves a young child among his survivors, the coroner said.
Lakes Funeral Home of McKee is in charge of Ward’s arrangements.
