State police investigate shooting

Brian Smith
Register News Writer

An apparent attempted burglary ended with a suspect being taken to a Lexington hospital with a gunshot wound Tuesday night.

Kentucky State Police were summoned to a home on Simpson Lane around 10:50 p.m. after reports of a burglary in progress.

When police arrived, the property owner, John Fair, told troopers a burglar alarm in his barn had been activated, state police said in a news release.

Fair had encountered a man, identified as Charles Harvey, inside the barn and an altercation ensued, Fair told police.

During the altercation, Fair shot Harvey, police said.

Harvey was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington with what police termed “non-life threatening injuries.”

State police Detective Chris Short is investigating both the alleged burglary attempt and the shooting, a news release stated.

No arrests were made in connection with the incident.

Berea crimes

Authorities in Berea are investigating two instances of counterfeit money being passed at local businesses.

Berea Police Department spokesman Capt. Ken Clark said officers are investigating a counterfeit $20 bill that was passed Nov. 3 at Smokehouse Grill, 359 Peggy Flats Road.

A counterfeit $5 bill was passed Nov. 9 at Walmart as well, Clark said.

Berea police are also investigating the theft of a Dell laptop computer valued at $1,100 from an office at Foley Middle School on Nov. 2.

A total of four people were arrested since Nov. 3 for alcohol intoxication, two shoplifting arrests were made and and one man was arrested for third-degree unlawful transaction with a minor and custodial interference, Clark said.
