Motel stabbing suspect identified

Richmond police are searching for a man, now believed to be in the Cincinnati area, in connection with Sunday’s stabbing of a woman at the Quality Quarters Inn.

The suspect is identified as Don Potter Jr., said Sgt. Willard Reardon, Richmond Police Department spokesman. Potter is described as a white male, 6 feet tall and weighing 135 pounds.

Potter’s whereabouts are unknown, but Reardon said police believe he may have fled to the Cincinnati area following the attack.

Police responded to the motel, near Exit 87 off Interstate 75, around 4:30 p.m. Sunday after a 911 call came into the county emergency operations center’s dispatch center of a stabbing at the motel.

The victim, described by police as a white female in her 30s, was transported to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center with multiple stab wounds and later transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Reardon said.

The woman remains in stable condition Monday at the Lexington hospital with what Reardon termed “not life-threatening” injuries.

Police have not yet identified the woman by name.

Detectives were on scene at the motel for most of Sunday afternoon and evening collecting evidence, Reardon said, and the crime scene included at least two rooms at the motel.

Reardon said Sunday night that officers were still working to determine the motive for the altercation that led to the stabbing.
