Man indicted for allegedly beating woman with gun

A Richmond man who was arrested for allegedly beating the mother of his children in the head with a gun has been indicted by a Madison County grand jury.

The indictment against Isiah Mundy, 26, of Linden Street, was returned Oct. 16. He is charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and second-degree persistent felony offender.

The charges stem from a Aug. 28 incident that began when officers were called to Turpin Drive to investigate a reported assault.

When they arrived, officers met with a female victim who claimed she had been assaulted by Mundy, the father of her two children, said Richmond Police Officer James Rogers, during testimony in Mundy’s preliminary hearing in district court.

“When we got to Turpin, the suspect had fled on foot and the victim had been taken to Pattie A. Clay,” Rogers said. “I went to the ER and talked to the victim. There was blood running out of her mouth, she had swollen jaws and was hard to understand.”

Despite her injuries, the woman, identified in the indictment as Octavia Gibbs, recounted to police the argument that led to the alleged assault.

“She said she had pulled up beside Mundy who was walking down the street,” Rogers said. “There was an argument and he first punched her through the open car window with his fist. She then said Mundy pulled a pistol from his pants or somewhere and smacked her across the face with it, rendering her unconscious. She then said Mundy reached into her car and took her purse which contained $600.”

Two female witnesses that were in Gibbs’ vehicle at the time corroborated the victim’s story, Rogers said.

“This was a substantial assault,” Rogers said. “She had both sides of her jaw broken. She was transferred from Pattie A. Clay to UK Hospital where she had surgery. I think her jaws were wired shut.”

Officers were unable to locate Mundy immediately following the alleged assault, but the next morning, officers again were summoned to Turpin Drive to investigate a report that Mundy was causing a disturbance.

Officers who arrived on the scene arrested Mundy on an outstanding warrant for non-payment of fines that was unrelated to the assault case.

During an interview, Rogers said Mundy denied a lot of Gibbs’ claims and said he never had a gun.

“Mundy said, ‘I slapped the dogs**t out of her,’” Rogers said. “He claimed the blow was open-handed.”

Mundy is lodged in the Madison County Detention Center in lieu of a $50,000 cash bond.

If convicted of the charges, Mundy faces 20 to 30 years imprisonment.

If convicted, he could be sentenced to one to five years imprisonment. (KSP)

• On Sept. 18, the grand jury indicted Christopher S. Slone, 36, address unknown, for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol, fourth offense or greater; operating a motor vehicle while license is suspended for driving under the influence, third offense; failure of owner to maintain required insurance, second or greater offense; second-degree fleeing or evading police; giving an officer a false name or address; and second-degree persistent felony offender. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 10 to 20 years imprisonment. (RPD)

An indictment is a formal accusation and does not establish guilt.
