Salvation Army accepting Angel Tree applications

The Salvation Army Corps and Women’s Auxiliary on Monday will begin accepting applications for its annual Angel Tree program and holiday food baskets.

Applications for the programs will be taken through Oct. 24. Those needing assistance can fill out applications at the Salvation Army office at 1675 East Main Street in Richmond between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday.

Angel trees, decorated with paper ornaments featuring a child’s name and gift ideas, will be placed at local stores and banks starting in mid-November. Community members are asked to choose an angel and buy Christmas presents for the child.

Angel Tree gifts will be distributed Dec. 16 and 17.

Thanksgiving food baskets will be distributed in November at the Salvation Army office, and Christmas food baskets will be distributed along with the Angel Tree gifts.

The Women’s Auxiliary has for many years been aided in filling the bags of food by groups and individuals in the community. Any group or individual interested in helping with the project can call the Salvation Army office. Bags must be returned to the Salvation Army by Nov. 20.

Throughout the holiday season, the Women’s Auxiliary also will continue its soup kitchen on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salvation Army’s shelter.

For details about volunteering or donating to the Salvation Army holiday programs, call 624-5826 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Salvation Army in Richmond serves Madison, Rockcastle, Estill and Lee counties by providing toys and support services to more than 2,200 individuals and families during the holiday season.
