Apartments vandalized

Brian Smith
Register News Writer

BEREA Vandals broke into a pair of vacant apartments on Spring Circle Drive last week, causing more than $3,000 in damage.

The first break-in was reported Aug. 15, said Capt. Ken Clark, Berea Police Department spokesman, and the second was reported two days later.

In both break-ins, Clark said, holes were knocked in walls, doors were ripped from their hinges and grafitti was left in one of the apartments.

Damage to the second apartment was estimated at $2,500, while a definitive estimate for the first apartment was unavailable but exceeded $500.

“We don’t really know who did it,” Clark said. “We don’t have any leads.”

If suspects are identified, they could be charged with second-degree burglary and first- and second-degree criminal mischief, Clark said. The burglary charge and the first-degree mischief charges are felonies, with the burglary charge punishable by five to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Burglaries at stores

Police responded Aug. 18 to reports of burglaries at the Boone Square Mini Mall and at Snow White Collectibles on Richmond Road.

Glass doors at both businesses were broken to gain entry, Clark said. An estimated $50 in knives were stolen from Boone Square, while a laptop computer and a Sony PlayStation 2 video game console valued at $700 were stolen from Snow White Collectibles.

Police are still looking for suspects in the thefts, Clark said.
